Our Process

How It Works

How does the hotline work?

Our operators will ask you for your exact location before you use. In the rare event that you stop responding to us, we will get you help either through a predetermined responder or by notifying your local Emergency Medical Services.

The helpline does not collect demographics or personal information such as race, ethnicity, name, gender; the address is only collected by the operator in case of emergency and the address is not stored in any database.

Step 1

People who will be using drugs alone place a toll-free call to 800-972-0590.

Step 1

Step 2

They are given a brief disclaimer message and placed on hold while an operator is located.
Step 2

Step 3

The operator conducts a brief intake, which is confidential, that includes the exact location of the caller (in case of overdose and a need for EMS activation), the intended substance of use and the route of administration (both of which inform the operator of how long the call will last approximately based off internal policy).

Step 3

Step 4

The caller then uses the substance and stays in verbal communication with the operator for a period of time until both the caller and the operator have decided that they are safe to disconnect.

Step 4

Step 5

Callers can use multiple times during the call without restriction. If the caller becomes unresponsive, the operator activates emergency medical services for the caller and stays on the line until they arrive.
